UnitedHealth has used Optum as a safety net as other major health insurers struggle with severe exchange market losses. A key takeaway from its success is that other payers should consider entering the healthcare services market to counteract risky insurance products.
Optum is a titan in the healthcare sector, generating profits for parent company UnitedHealth Group thanks to its network of more than 5,000 hospitals and almost all payers. About 300 health plans, including UnitedHealthcare, the insurance division of UnitedHealth Group, are clients of Optum.
According to Eric Murphy, CEO of OptumInsight and former chief growth officer of Optum, around 70% of the market for its payer portfolio uses integrity tools. About 20% of the market manages competence around claims processing using Optum.
