Who says rock 'n' roll concerts are only about music and fun? They're also about the drama, excitement, and lots of loud cheering.
Every artist feels nervous before hitting the stage. To get themselves all hyped up and go in front of thousands of spectators to do their thing, some artists feel like they perform at their best after a shot of vodka or a glass of whiskey.
In some cases, however, musicians can go a little overboard with the partying and their behind-the-scenes antics, which means that their rock and roll lifestyle catches up to them pretty quickly. And if you’re still wondering about what we’re getting at, we're talking about real incidents from history when artists got a little too tipsy and made blunders on stage.
#1 - 1978: Beach Boys' Carl Wilson
In 1978, while performing “Good Vibrations,” the Beach Boys' Carl Wilson drunkenly appeared on stage before proceeding to embarrass his entire musical group. Not only did he stumble the lyrics during his infamous performance but also proceeded to sing off-key throughout his signature lead. This proved to be one of the lowest points in the Beach Boys’ musical history, with the bands’ popularity kept waning all the way up until 1983 when Wilson's brother Dennis passed away.
#2 - 2004: Eddie Van Halen
Ask any music fan in the 2000s and they'll tell you all about Halen's alcohol and substance addiction. So it does not come as a surprise that problems in his personal life meant that Van Halen had a pretty unflattering outburst while on tour. In 2004, during his reunion concert with Sammy Hagar, Halen's guitar got unplugged mid-performance, and despite their best efforts, his technicians couldn't fix the problem. Van Halen grew increasingly frustrated and by the end of the tour, he was so furious over the whole affair that he smashed his guitar on stage before crying and highlighting the issues in his personal life with the audience members.
#3 - 2009: Avril Lavigne
In 2009 when Lavigne appeared as a guest for comedic band Steel Panther, she appeared to be quite drunk during the performance. The Canadian songstress wasn't just singing off-key, her questionable on-stage antics also meant that she also embarrassed the group in front of thousands of people.
#4 - 2010: Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland
Often, others have to suffer because of the poor decisions or judgment calls of a single person and that's exactly what happened with the musical group Stone Temple Pilots. Scott Weiland, the band’s lead vocalist who was also known for his substance abuse, went absolutely berserk while on the road during a performance in Houston, Texas. The mind-boggling incident started with him blabbering about God and friendship before admitting to drinking before coming up on stage. Needless to say, it was a night to forget for the band members who had kept their fans waiting and started the show pretty late, to begin with.
Wrapping it Up
Having a drink every now and then is quite acceptable but going overboard with it and making an absolute mess in front of thousands of onlookers might not be the smartest way to go about it.
