As children, we were always asked to be truthful, regardless of the situation. But as we grow older, no matter how hard we try, we are faced with times and situations when it’s very hard to resist the prospect of lying just a little to get ourselves out of a particularly tricky situation.
But what could be so hard to deal with, that to overcome it, you’re compelled to lie? The answer to this pertinent question could range anywhere from trying to avoid a socially awkward situation to a face-saving measure by someone faced with embarrassment. Now, won’t you agree that all of that sounds relatable and reasonable?
If you still don’t resonate with us, here’s a quick rundown of some of the most common lies we end up telling in our daily lives.
“Just Five More Minutes”
For most of us, this response is a quick and easy way to dodge questions like, "Where have you been?" or "How long will it take?." And most of us still tend to respond like this despite the fact that we haven’t actually even left our homes yet. Wasting someone’s time and then lying about it? Not cool.
“It's all Fine!”
The most common phrases people use to smooth out a potentially awkward social conversation go something like, "It's all fine" or "We're good." No matter how much you’re actually hurting, depressed, or feeling angry on the inside, it’s always possible to take the easy way out by using phrases like these if you don’t intend to share how you’re actually feeling.
“Go On, I'm Listening!”
If someone is way too busy paying attention to their electronic devices and they instead ask you to carry on talking, chances are, they haven't heard a word you said. With our short attention spans and inability to connect on a deeper social level, lies like these are an easy get-out-of-jail-free card.
“Just Kidding!”
Sometimes presenting others with facts just to make your point without making a whole scene of it is all we really want to. In instances like these, we tend to resort to phrases like, “Just Kidding!” after a particularly pointed response just so that we don’t get into any trouble for what we just said moments earlier.
“Sorry, I'm Busy!”
Sometimes, it can be quite difficult to circumnavigate certain situations, and to make a swift exit, we make up imaginary appointments and urgent matters that require our immediate attention. Ironically enough, in most cases, all we really have on our to-do list is lying in bed and watching TV for hours upon hours. Quite convenient, isn't it?
All in All…
We ask you again—won’t you agree that these are some of the most frequently used, not-so-harmful lies that we use on a daily basis without thinking twice? Some food for thought.
